Incorporating LGBTQ+ into Curriculum

I have recently read Don't Overlook LGBTQ History in High School, written by Alexandra Pannoni in the US News. The state of California was the first state to incorporate LGBTQ history into their curriculum, with other states showing interest in making the same change.

Learning about history helps students better understand the overall picture of their history and how society has been shaped to the way they experience it. Incorporating history of LGBTQ into the curriculum will have a tremendous impact on LGBTQ students. In the article it says, "Research has made clear that LGBTQ students who see themselves reflected in the curriculum do better in school, are more likely to feel connected and invested, and have a better and clearer sense of themselves". School can be difficult for LGBTQ students because they feel as though they always have to have some sort of guard up. Being able to learn about people like them in History will give the students a sense that the school recognizes them and cares enough to teach them about people just like them as well.

Personally, I believe that incorporating LGBTQ history into the curriculum will help for the students to feel safer in the classroom. The LGTBQ community will be a topic of discussion because it is part of the curriculum instead of being a topic of gossip because of a kid in the class. I also think it will be beneficial to the students that do not classify themselves as LGBTQ because they will be given knowledge that they may have never learned, and could be beneficial to them.

  1. This is an interesting perspective. While history is ALL of what occurs within a lived context and time, only a sliver gets written and re-written. I am curious about whether you took the next step to investigate aspects of LGBTQ+ history. What did you learn? How would you go about educating yourself and then your community? Can you take this post deeper connecting your opinion with potential actions?
