Celebrating Failure

Growing up one of my greatest fears was failure. There were times that I would hold back because I was so afraid of what would happen if I did end up failing. I would put so much pressure on myself for school that it became a chore instead of something that I genuinely enjoyed. Although it was not until I felt the feeling of failing that I came to fully appreciate the feeling of success.

Throughout the TED Talk there are many examples of how somethings that you would never expect to be possible can become possible if you learn from failure. At the end of the TED Talk Astro Teller said, "make it safe to fail". As a future educator I believe it is very important to relay that message to all of my students, and to make my classroom an environment where failing is okay, infant it is encouraged. If students are too afraid to fail they will be too afraid to try new things which could lead to them missing out on opportunities. Students should not be punished for failing. Failing is a learning experience and students should be rewarded for failing and then trying again until they are successful.

  1. Does the process of assessment and grades led to punishment? What is an alternative?

  2. I like your point that modern schools place high pressure on students for success, but how can you measure success without noting failure? How would teachers know which areas students need to improve upon if their students were not allowed to fail? To be a critical thinker, a student must be allowed to experiment with ideas, improving upon his or her failures along the way.
